When macOS saves a file with Finder data, extended attributes or forks to a non-Mac file system (e.g. resource fork) that might also be associated with the file. Mac file systems (HFS, HFS+ and APFS) store this data along with a file’s data and any forks (e.g. The type/creator codes are not part of the file, but are separate “Finder Info” data. (As a final aside, Apple also provides the corresponding SetFile command line utility, so creating reverse script – assigning type/creator codes based on filename extensions – would also be possible.) (As an aside, a lot of the creator codes can be guessed from the letters used, but some are ‘obvious’ only because they became well known, like BOBO for ClarisWorks/AppleWorks and R*ch for BBEdit.) And any files you have not on these lists, you could do a search and find out what they are. But there are some lists already on the web that most likely cover any file you’re likely to come across. You would have to manually create this lookup table, and there is no ‘master list’ to get the type/creator codes from. in AppleScript) that you could drop a file or files on, and it would extract the type & creator codes, look up the document type associated with them, and append the appropriate extension to the file. So it would be relatively simple to create a script (e.g. > GetFileInfo -c Initial\ letter\ to\ Prof\ Smyth You can get just the type code or just the creator code: > GetFileInfo -t Initial\ letter\ to\ Prof\ Smyth And even then, it displays a different incorrect icon for different files, with seemingly no reason:īut to answer your question about how to access type/creator codes, Apple actually provides a command line tool for this called GetFileInfo: > GetFileInfo Initial\ letter\ to\ Prof\ Smythįile: "/Users/me/Documents/Correspondence/Letters/Initial letter to Prof Smyth" But now, even when the Mac understands the document type based on the type/creator codes, it displays the wrong icon. In Mojave, I would get sensible file types and icons for my older files with type/creator codes and no extensions. In my experience, this is a problem that appeared after I upgraded from Mojave (10.14) to Monterey (12). sit allows me to open these archives with BetterZip.Ĭan anyone think of a way to figure out what application can open an old Mac document file? I was thinking that the best way of identifying the associated application for an old document file would be to extract the Type/Creator tags.ĭoes anyone know how to extract Type/Creator tags with an app that runs on Monterey? For example, some files have the plain text “SIT” near the beginning. If I open the files in BBEdit, sometimes I get a hint of the application that created them. Some files say “ Microsoft Word 1.x-5.x document” in the Kind field of a Get Info window, but most just say “Document” and give no indication what application produced them. Now many of these these files without extensions are displayed as “exec” files in the Finder and double clicking on them is of no value. Of course, in the old days files didn’t need extensions and I didn’t include them in file names. I saved old files from my Mac Plus days and I’d like to open them with applications running under Monterey.

Now you can “walk in Jim Corbett’s footsteps” on a guided trek along “the Maneater of Mohan Trail,” hosted by Wild World India that’s a trip I wouldn’t mind taking. All good and sound arguments, you will admit, for my having acted as I did but the regret remains that through fear of the consequences to myself, or fear of losing the only chance I might ever get, or possibly a combination of the two, I did not awaken the sleeping animal and give him a sporting chance.” These arguments were (a) the tiger was a man-eater that was better dead than alive, (b) therefore it made no difference whether he was awake or asleep when killed, and (c) that had I walked away when I saw his belly heaving up and down I should have been morally responsible for the deaths of all the human beings he killed thereafter. “My personal feelings in the matter are I know of little interest to others, but it occurs to me that possibly you also might think it was not cricket, and in that case I should like to put the arguments before you that I used on myself, in the hope that you will find them more satisfactory than I did. The majority were embedded in hard muscles, a few were wedged firmly between bones, and all were broken off short under the skin.”Ī few pages earlier in the book, and unrelated to porcupines, Corbett agonizes about having killed this tiger while it slept: Many of these quills have been over nine inches in length and as thick as pencils. “I have extracted, possibly, a couple of hundred porcupine quills from the man-eating tigers I have shot. The flesh under the skin, from the tiger’s chest to the pad of his foot, was soapy, and of a dark yellow colour cause enough to have made the poor beast moan when he walked, and quite sufficient reason for his having become-and having remained-a man-eater, for porcupine quills do not dissolve no matter how long they are embedded in flesh. “When the skin had been removed from the rest of the animal, I made a long cut from the chest to the pad of the festering left leg, and as I removed the skin, drew out of the flesh, one after another, porcupine quills which the men standing round eagerly seized as souvenirs the longest of these quills was about five inches, and their total number was between twenty-five and thirty. Here’s Jim Corbett, in his 1944 book Man-eaters of Kumaon, writing about the man-eater of Mohan, a tiger that he killed in 1930: Two of the most famous hunters of man-eating cats in India, Jim Corbett and Kenneth Anderson, wrote about the phenomenon of finding porcupine quills in the man-eaters’ dead bodies. When I first read that, I thought that maybe the pain made them grumpy enough to kill anyone who crossed them, but it turns out that it slows them down enough that they can’t hunt their normal prey and have to start killing slow-moving humans. It seems that most of the man-eating tigers and leopards of legend became man-eaters after being injured, such as by having porcupine quills embedded in their bodies. Even so, they still get into tangles, and surprisingly, porcupines have been indirectly responsible for the deaths of thousands of humans through their quills. Crested porcupines, like this one, have hollow quills on their tails that they can rattle to ward off predators. Porcupine quills are pretty much hardened hair, and they are attached to muscles that give the porcupine impressive control over the quills. It’s a nocturnal rodent that lives in the region of Asia and the Middle East bordered on one end by Turkey and Syria and on the other by Kyrgyzstan and India. Today, the Indian crested porcupine’s number is up. Before our brief Olympic interlude, I was enjoying letting pick the mammals, so let’s get back to that with another random week. At the end of the episode "Cop Out", when Sammo Law is driving through Los Angeles, a sign is seen which advertises Rush Hour, as the movie was released at the time of the episode. The pairing of Hung and Hall as partners was similar to, albeit a bit less overtly comedic than, the partnership between Sammo's friend, Jackie Chan, and Chris Tucker in the Rush Hour feature films. Then on Episode 9, "How Sammo Got His Groove Back", Arsenio Hall joined the cast as Terrell Parker, a wisecracking former LAPD press liaison who began helping out Sammo and the gang on cases. In January, I posted a quick piece about the challenges Captivate 2019 output has with the JAWS 16 screen reader - more precisely, how the experience falls apart in Internet Explorer. When we come face-to-face with our imperfections, we have a choice: we can deny and deflect, or we can engage and improve. That’s the only way we get better at anything. The next time you feel the urge to say, “I’m not racist,” replace it with, “I don’t want to be racist.” Instead of digging into denial, learn to do better. I should rethink what I’m saying/doing in light of that fact.” That shifts my thinking, so instead of jumping straight into denial and attempts to defend my character, I’m more likely to look at how my actions may be misrepresenting my intentions, whether I’ve overlooked something or acted in ignorance. When it comes to racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., I’ve found it’s healthier to think, “I don’t want to be” instead of “I’m not.”įor example, if someone says, “That thing you just said/did is racist,” instead of thinking, “I’m not racist! I don’t hate black people!” it’s much healthier to think, “I don’t want to be racist. Can you explain?” He did, and now I try to avoid using that word anymore. I immediately had to fight down the urge to say, “But I’m not a racist,” and replaced it with, “I didn’t know that. A friend of mine told me I had said something racist. When we shift focus, then we can focus on changing behavior.Ī couple of years ago, I said that I felt “gypped” about something. The problem is whether I said or did something racially offensive. The question is not whether I am a racist. Instead, we should stop focusing on identity - in this case, the word racist - and focus on behavior instead. It would be like my wife confessing to me that I said or did something hurtful, and I responded with, “I’m not abusive.” I cannot do better if I am unwilling to acknowledge my behavior. Once we put all of those together, it’s easy to say, “I’m not a racist.” Unfortunately, that statement also closes off any opportunity for growth or improvement. From this perspective, systematic racism cannot exist. Either I hate all people of color entirely, or I’m not a racist at all. When we define racism this way, we can only be guilty of it if we intend harm. I can only do something racist if I intend to. Robin DiAngelo, in her video Deconstructing White Privilege, makes the case that we define racism in specific ways that make it almost impossible to take personal accountability for our racist thoughts and actions. Therefore, you must have misinterpreted that terrible thing I said or did. Instead, it put the burden back on the injured party. It says that I don’t need to change anything about myself. This statement - “I’m not a racist” - completely absolves us of personal accountability. We deny it’s who we are, but it’s also the completely wrong thing to say. Someone says or does something blatantly racist someone calls them out and they defend themselves by saying, “I’m not a racist.” Being told we did something racist hurts, so we become defensive. You’ve heard it time after time - from celebrities, business owners, and many public figures. The only viable hypothesis was that Megatherium was a terrestrial animal which used its large claws to tear off branches or even uproot trees, perhaps sitting back on its tail (a part of the skeleton which had been unknown to Cuvier) to munch on leaves and treelimbs. It is very similar to the mount of Megatherium in London’s Natural History Museum, as well as numerous subsequently-reconstructed skeletons at other museums. (Though, in his 1836 contribution to the Bridgewater Treatises, the English geologist William Buckland envisioned Megatherium as an animal which dug into the ground for roots.) An alternative was that, like living sloths, Megatherium lived in the trees, but again its large size seemed to preclude this possibility what sort of tree could hold such a large animal?Ī reconstruction of Megatherium as conceived by Gaudry and still on display in the Museum of natural history in Paris. It certainly had the claws for digging, but this idea was too absurd, especially considering how populations of these creatures might undermine the landscape. The first was that the sloth living underground, burrowing through the soil like an enormous mole. One of the first to do so was another French paleontologist, Fran√ßois Jules Pictet de la Rive (often simply referred to as Pictet), who considered several hypotheses about Megatherium in the 1850’s. Yet Cuvier’s work on Megatherium was largely descriptive – it would be up to other naturalists to reconstruct its lifestyle and habits. Megatherium, based upon Bru’s original illustrations, as it appeared in the second edition of Cuvier’s Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles. As Cuvier did not accept the idea of evolution there could be no genetic connection between the ancient monster and the living sloths, but the similarity between the two could not be denied. He gave it the name Megatherium americanum, and appraised it as an extinct, peculiar creature most similar of the small arboreal sloths which still clung the branches of South American rainforests. The following year it was shipped to the Cabinet of Natural History in Madrid, Spain where it was assembled and illustrated by Juan Bautista Bru, and it was on the basis of these illustrations that the French anatomist Georges Cuvier was able to determine what this spectacular animal was. It was in that year that Manuel Torres discovered the nearly complete skeleton of an immense, strange animal on the banks of the river Luj√°n about 65 kilometers west of Buenos Aires in northern Argentina. No doubt humans have been finding the remains of giant ground sloths for quite some time, but the story of Megatherium as we know it began in 1788. The bones of the “great beast” represented a world which flourished and disappeared in the not-so-distant past, but, as illustrated by Christine Argot in a review of its history, illustrations of what Megatherium looked like have been in flux since the time of its discovery. It was more than just a natural curiosity. It was fossil mammals, not dinosaurs, which enthralled the public during the turn of the 19th century, and arguably the most famous was the enormous ground sloth Megatherium. Hutchinson’s Extinct Monsters.įor over a century and a half dinosaurs have been the unofficial symbols and ambassadors of paleontology, but this was not always so.
